LinkedIn

So, this was mentioned during the first week at that session about CV writing and interview skills, but I thought I'd post a link here just in case.

Sign up with LinkedIn here

LinkedIn is a professional network that connects you to other professionals by education, skills, and job experience. If you haven't heard of it, it's a free website that links you as a professional to only to colleagues and classmates that you know but also to the people that those colleagues and classmates know to create degrees of connection to other professionals and companies.

I'd say it's like "Facebook for professionals" but that's selling LinkedIn short.

Basically, it takes all those "friend of a friend" connections that can be crucial in getting your foot in the door for an interview with a company/hospital/pre-reg position and puts them online.

For example, you may have a friend that works for Company A, and that friend may know that his or her company is looking to hire someone. Being linked to your friend on LinkedIn may help your profile to stand out, especially if you possess the skills needed for the position.

But LinkedIn is so much more than just a resumé or a word-of-mouth recommendation, because it brings your skills and experience to the fore.

When you create a LinkedIn profile, the site will ask you all about your education history, your work history, your job skills, your language skills, past projects you've worked on. LinkedIn allows you to create the in-depth resumé that showcases your strongest points without being overwhelming for the employers who may read it.

I'd go on about LinkedIn, but I thought it'd be better to link to a snazzy video here.

And, if you're interested in knowing more, there are tons of tutorials on Youtube. Also, the LinkedIn Youtube Channel is full of cool stuff about how to make your profile shine!

Hope this helps.
